Elafonisi

"If there is one place in Crete that justifies the title 'paradise,' that is Elafonisi.

A small islet separated from the shore by a shallow strip of sea, you can literally cross it on foot with water reaching barely to your knee, with rosy sand made from crushed coral and waters that shift from light blue to green to emerald in just a few steps.

The characteristic pink hue of the sand is neither an illusion nor photo editing. It comes from millions of shell and coral fragments that time and the waves have smoothed down into powder. Nature has created something here that no designer would dare imagine: a color palette so soft and so rare that it often makes visitors believe their eyes are deceiving them.

Elafonisi is a Natura 2000 protected area, which means development there remains controlled. There are no sunbeds across its entire expanse, no grand hotel facilities, only the beach in its raw, unseen state. Even during the busiest months, if you walk a few minutes toward the northern edges of the island, you can find corners virtually to yourself.

The road to Elafonisi from Chania takes about an hour and thirty minutes, winding through some of Crete's wildest landscapes, gorges, dry-stone walls, and villages that seem frozen in time. Arriving at the islet, as the road suddenly leaves you gazing at this improbable landscape, feels like a reward well worth every single kilometer.
